I received a grant from Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in support of My Black Owned 2024. A participating business owner started
a YouTube channel during their 1:1 consultation and has created 480+ videos. Participating business owner and their video were shown on WGN Chicago News.
HIGHLIGHTS
My Black Owned was created to amplify the stories of Black-owned businesses through video and educate business owners on how to use it as an effective marketing tool. During August, National Black Business Month, Chicago communities vote for their favorite local Black-owned businesses. The top 3 nominated receive a complimentary video marketing package and video marketing consultation to continue telling stories with the knowledge they’ve gained. Free workshops on mobile video creation are also held to support additional business owners. The project's first iteration was completed as my civic media graduate thesis. My Black Owned: Austin, Chicago was done in collaboration with AAABNA, a City of Chicago Business Center, and highlighted 3 businesses in the Austin community on Chicago’s West Side.
